Artist's statement
Most of the time, life is based on patterns and regularity, waking, working, eating, sleeping etc. But when something does occur – it could be hearing something, or seeing something new – it is then perceived as sudden, original or fresh. We then start to adapt on these new circumstances. Once this has happened we then again incorporate it within our rhythmic pattern of things and consider it normal, usual or regular. This is what I try to portray in my work. A uniformity of things, nothing new but on the ‘everyday’.
I once saw my nephew get a writing pad, a ballpoint pen and just start to draw. For quite some time I had forgotten about the basics of how I started drawing in the same way. I had to some how undo everything I had learnt to carry out these drawings. My work has a ‘no frills’ approach. It is based on the attitude that this has been instilled within me, and the people around me, from a very early age. The attitude of – what you see is what you get. The content of my drawings are based on very mundane, inanimate objects, every day objects that I come across, e.g. my front door, my tooth brush, my car etc.
My work is in relation to the surroundings that I have been brought up with. This is really the essence of my work.
