Artist's statement
I come from a Hindu Brahmin background and from an ancient culture where art traditions are seen as a part of life ever evolving and ever changing. I was fostered and later married into a Scottish family and had all my formal education in Britain. This has given me an added dimension of experiencing British culture and art traditions. I have also travelled widely both in the Indian subcontinent, the Middle East and Europe. It is this fusion of many cultures and values that is the strength of modern art in Britain, and I am proud to be a part of it. I see art as a force freeing people form narrow hide-bound beliefs controlled by religion, ethnicity and culture. It is this intermediate space between belonging and non-belonging that is important and that energises my work. When creative spirit is free and allowed room for growth individual inheritance contributes and enriches art traditions

I will also be travelling towards the end of 2007 for six months painting in India, Pakistan, Nepal and in other East European locations. This will result in a major themed exhibition entitled Hands On celebrating the lives of women who work with their hands in subsistence economies. It will be accompanied by a dvd of women’s songs filmed and recorded on location when women are at work. This exhibition is scheduled to take place at the Brewery Arts Centre as a major event in their International Women’s Arts Festival in 2009 and hopefully will tour widely both here and in European locations.
